From Pastor Mike
Hi Everyone, Worrying is something I've always struggled with. What does my schedule look like this week? How can I do all of this in such a short amount of time? Will I make this deadline or that deadline? What if I make the wrong decision about something? Will my child be ok at school? What about our financial situation? These and other questions are wrought with worry. Perhaps not too long ago you asked some of them yourself. Worrying is something that seems to affect all of us in some way or another. There is a lot to worry about. We worry about those things we care about, we wish and long for the best for our families and friends, our country and world, and our own well-being. So then to worry might even seem as natural to us as breathing. So what are we to make of Jesus' words in Matthew 6:34 that read, "So do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today." Some people insistent on literally reading these words might say that to worry about anything at all and not to catch it and end it immediately is to disobey the teaching of Jesus. However, their worrying over not worrying about the worries of tomorrow is probably making them worry all the more! Some might suggest that this is an impossible teaching to follow. Who, one might ask, actually doesn't worry about something in their lives? While both of these points hold some validity, I would like to look at these verses themselves for some clues in how we can better understand and apply these words to our lives. When Jesus says, "Today's trouble is enough for today," we're offered our first clue. For it suggests that troubles or worries are common to our every day. So to pretend as if things in our lives won't at times concern us or worry us is only to kid ourselves. Second, to go back some verses, we learn that even the lilies of the field, things of God's great creation which God takes care of, are insignificant compared to us. Jesus assures that "tomorrow will bring worries of its own," yet tells us that to be consumed with what could or could not be in the future is to worry in vain. God's providential care is active and with us now. This is a gift. We might call it love, we might call it grace, but whatever we call it, we must rest assured that by the Spirit of God we can find strength to face the troubles and worries that not only confront us now, but those that will inevitably come tomorrow. Our priority should be to find the fullness in each moment we're given, moments which brim with the possibilities and potential of great things. I pray you all strength to face every day, and despite the worries that plague you, think about how you will best respond to them. Remember, you are never alone. It's not often that I can sneak into the sanctuary for Sunday morning worship, but the past few Sundays I have and have loved what I have heard, especially the music! A couple of weeks ago the choir sang a wonderful anthem called "Lord Here Am I." It was so beautiful and so powerful at the same time. Julie Duemler directed the choir because during Jay and Dawn's time off, she is our choir director at church. The choir sounds passionate and inspiring. Thanks Julie for helping everyone make such beautiful music and for helping us all to better worship God! Eastwood Welcomes a New Member! This past Sunday we were pleased to welcome Glen Alan Graham into our community of faith! Glen can be reached at: 411 Murfreesboro Rd., #268 Nashville, TN. 37210 210-347-2646 valle4gris@yahoo.com. Welcome to Eastwood Glen! Passing of a former Eastwood member It is my sad duty to inform you that Jane Murphey passed away on September 26th. Jane was a former member of Eastwood in the 40's and 50's and was also the church organist during that time. Let us be in prayer for her family and friends celebrating her life.
